Finals Winners Again!

- Fusai Wins a Computer... Alexandra Fusai was
presented with a Bull Zenith laptop computer following
her Semifinal match. Bull, a French computer hardware
company, donated the computer to the youngest French
player competing on Friday of the tournament. Of the
three French players remaining, Fusai is the youngest at
24 years of age. Julie Halard Decugis is 27 and Nathalie
Tauziat is 30.

- Monday 5/25/98
- The WTA rankings released today have
Alexandra at #46 in singles (up from #54) and #7 in
doubles (up from #10). Nice moves!
- Alexandra plays Barbara Paulus (WTA #24)
at 11 am (Paris time) on Court 1 (actually the third
court, after "Central" and "Suzanne
Lenglen").
- Win it for the hometown crowd, ok?

- Tuesday 5/26/98
- Alexandra won! It was Fusai over Paulus
6-1, 7-5. The 2nd set was a real nail-biter! After being
down 1-3 (at least) Alexandra battled back as follows:
2-3, 2-4, 3-4, 4-4, 4-5, 5-5, 6-5, and finally won the
match from deuce.
- Next up is Tara Snyder (WTA #55) and
doubles, of course.

- Alexandra won! Fusai over Snyder 6-4, 6-3!
- Both sets were very exciting!
- What I saw (via internet) went like this:
- 3-2, 4-2, 5-2, 5-3, 5-4, 6-4, 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 3-3, 4-3, 5-3, 6-3
- Shine on, Alexandra, ok?
- NEXT: Arantxa Sanchez-Vicario (WTA #5, seed #4), probably Saturday.
- Think of it as a challenge appropriate to the occasion!
- And then there's doubles, of course, probably tomorrow.

- YEA! Fusai/Tauziat over Bobkova/Melicharova 6-1, 2-6, 6-0!
- It went like this: 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 5-0, 5-1, 6-1, 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 2-4, 2-5, 2-6, then 6-0
- A bit scary-exciting! The 2nd game, 3rd set, looked like it was the match.
- Natalie: you've still got it just fine!
- Worth getting up at 4:45 am to watch (on the Web)? YES!
- Next up: Grzybowski/Sidot or Carlsson/Rubin, probably Sunday.
- ALSO: Alexandra and David Adams are seeded 7th in the mixed doubles. They got a bye on the first round.

- Saturday 5/30/98
- Alexandra lost to Arantxa on Court Central 6-2, 6-1. Oh well.
- It was like this: 0-1, 0-2, 0-3, 1-3, 1-4, 2-4, 2-5, 2-6, 0-1, 0-2, 0-3, 0-4, 0-5, 1-5, 1-6.
- It looked like she did better than that score implies, though. She seemed to get a lot of points and lead a lot of games. And it must have been a real thrill, both for her and for the crowd, just having her there (again!).
- THEN: Alexandra won! Fusai/Tauziat over Grzybowska/Sidot 6-4, 6-1!
- Some games looked very hard-fought, especially (ironically?) in the second set.
- It was like this: 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, 4-2, 4-3, 5-3, 5-4, 6-4, 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 4-1, 5-1, 6-1.
- The French Foxies are double-rollin' now! Go, girls, go!
- NEXT: Fusai/Tauziat vs. DeLone/Schlukebir or Likhovtseva/Sugiyama
- AND: Fusai/Adams vs. Hiraki/Kilderry

- Fusai/Adams lost to Hiraki/Kilderry on Court 10 6-2, 2-6, 6-2. Oh well.
- It was like this: 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 1-4, 1-5, 2-5, 2-6, 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 2-2, 3-2, 4-2, 5-2, 6-2, 1-0, 1-1, 1-2, 1-3, 2-3, 2-4, 2-5, 2-6.
- At least winning 6 in a row in the middle there was impressive! And the early games of the 3rd set seemed to be very hard-fought.
- Maybe Alexandra's been staying up late surfing the Web on her new computer?

- It was Fusai/Tauziat over Likhovtseva/Sugiyama 5-7, 7-6, 6-4. That score only begins to hint at the bizarreness of this 2 1/2 hour match!
- Here's a more revealing hint: 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 4-1, 5-1, 5-2, 5-3, 5-4, 5-5, 5-6, 5-7, 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 2-3, 2-4, 3-4, 4-4, 5-4, 5-5, 6-5, 6-6, (1-3, 5-4, 6-6, 9-7) 7-6, 1-0, 2-0, 3-0, 4-0, 4-1, 4-2, 4-3, 4-4, 5-4, 6-4.
- The crowd must have been going positively bananas! I know I was!

- Apparently, it was a rainy day in Birmingham today and there was no play.
- But Alexandra had a good day anyway!
- She's movin' on up! Today's Corel WTA rankings moved her from #46 in singles to #38!
- Corel's news was not all good, though: her doubles ranking fell to #10 from #7. Oh well.
- Now let's see both rankings improve after Birmingham!

- Well: I finally found some news from Birmingham: some good, some bad, some, well, I don't know!
- Good: Alexandra was seeded #14 so she got a "bye" on first round!
- Bad: Alexandra lost her match today (2nd round, 1st singles match for her in Birmingham) to Larisa Neiland 7-5, 6-2.
- I don't know: what's the doubles deal? If anyone can give me info please e-mail me ASAP here! Thanks!
- Alexandra: you're doing very fine this year! I hear Birmingham is the Cleveland of Britain. Maybe Drew Carey is there to show you around?

- Well: It appears Fusai/Tauziat were not even entered in the doubles at Birmingham! I don't want to speculate....
- (By the way: Natalie is doing very well in the Birmingham singles; she could win it all, like last year!)

- Alexandra is in the main draw at Eastbourne and her first round singles is against little Anna Kournikova. After Alexandra wins, little Anna will probably cry!
- (Re: Natalie: Birmingham ended in a 4-way tie due to weather.)

- Fusai/Tauziat are seeded #2 at Eastbourne. Their first match is vs. Miyagi/Pleming.
- Alexandra's first singles match at Wimbledon (next week) will be vs. Katarina Studenikova.

- Well: I could say all sorts of insulting things about "Little Anna"; but I won't. Alexandra lost 6-2, 1-6, 3-6 so she is now out of Eastbourne singles. I'm sure she gave nothing away!
- Now the #2 seeds Fusai/Tauziat can show they should have been the #1 seeds! You go, girls!
- In Corel's weekly point rankings Alexandra's rank fell slightly: from #38 to #40. Her doubles rank stayed at #10.

- Alexandra and Natalie lost to deSwardt/Novotna 1-6, 6-7. Oh well.
- It looks like they fought "the good fight" in that 2nd set, but, mmes, that "good fight" is also worth fighting in the 1st set, eh?
- So now be Champs at the Champs, ok?
- After Alexandra wins her 1st round match (vs. Katarina Studenikova, and it may go 3 sets; Alexandra seems to like 3 sets!), her "likely" next match is vs. Monica Seles. Aly: in 2 sets I think you can make the headline, "Seles falls to hot Fusai in 2nd round!" and Monica won't cry. Give her a rest! Monica is nice, but she's no more (or less) human than you are!
- Fusai/Tauziat are seeded #4. Their 1st match is vs. Csurgo/Yoshida.
